1. My name is Austin Kingsbury and I graduated from Smith Center High School in 2005. I graduated from Sterling College in December 2010. While I was at Sterling, I had extensive work with Loti as well as many other applications and technology that have me very well prepared to tackle any technology in the classroom as well as the tools to learn new technology quickly and effectively.
2. I was attracted to this position because I believe very strongly that we need to move forward as a country with technology in the classroom. I feel that a school that is addressing technology in the classroom, as your school is, is going to benefit the students as well as the teachers help our country to get better and more effective in the teaching realm. This position fits perfectly in those plans because this school is moving forward with technology and will continue to develop and grow in that area.
3. My strongest attributes are how I relate and interact with students. I feel that with my background, I can reach out to every student on any given level to help them succeed. I think that I am a very good motivator, and when you combine that with my teacher-student relationships, it is an equation for success in the classroom. One weakness that I have is that sometimes my expectations are too high and get discouraged when students or I do not reach our goals. I just simply move on, however, and set new goals for students or myself.
4. In 3-5 years it has always been my dream to move back home and teach and coach. My hometown school has not recently been taking the steps to move forward with technology in the classroom. I plan on taking the things that I have learned from Sterling College, as well as new things that I will have learned from this job and try to make changes at my hometown. I have always felt that dedication and hard work are the keys to obtaining any goal that you set for yourself as well.
5. I am a very “hands on person.” When I approach learning something new, I learn best by simply trying it out for myself. This is the same approach that I take when trying to learn new software applications. I will learn as much as I can on my own but if I do ever hit a snag then I ask questions to people I know to find the solution to the problem. I use some of my social networks and ask people with experience with the software if they can help me get past any struggles that I am having.
6. Technology can address so many different types of student learning. With technology we can address auditory and visual learners at once by having them see and hear a presentation done on a smart board. The kinesthetic learners can be helped by having them go up to a smart board and touch it to complete homework. The great thing about technology is that it can be manipulated and changed to meet the needs of children with special needs. Overall, technology is going to make an average teacher more effective because it can help every teacher with their delivery.
7. Technology, even as limited as it was at my school, has had a huge impact on my education. Learning how to type was the first technology I had interface with and it is one the most important skills I possess now as a professional that I see some other professionals struggle with. Even with limited exposure to technology, every bit that I got from my education has been beneficial to everyday life. Once a person learns a little bit about technology, it gives them a better idea how a new piece of technology is going to work. Technology is important and it had a pretty big impact on my education.
8. I don’t feel like I am the type of person to really push decisions upon people. However, I do feel like I am sort of a secret persuader. The way that I would encourage other teachers would be by having casual conversations with them about how great new technology was that I am working with. I would just tell them how effective is making me as a teacher and how beneficial it is to the students and tell them they should try it out. I think that if I can make a case to them that it is helpful to teachers and students alike, they will try it out.
9. A few tools that I am going to try to implement into my curriculum are the smart board, Elmo, Google Earth, and possibly some pod casting. As a PE/Health teacher our main goal is to show students how to exercise and to teach them about being healthy and maintaining health for life. I do not plan on being in the classroom for a lot of time as a PE/Health teacher, but when we are in the classroom I want it to be interactive and fun. I plan on using the smart board to have students come up and help label parts of the body and systems of the body. I will use Google Earth to help my students map out distances for required running for the class. There are many ways I plan on integrating technology into my lessons and every time it will be different. My hope is that the students will never get bored and I can keep every lesson fun and interactive. Technology is a great thing and we should not be wasting it as teachers.

In reading this post I was pleasantly surprised with some of your comments. With your drive and passion I hope that an opportunity for you to return to our home town of Smith Center works out. Within these responses you made some excellent statements about motivation and inspiration styles for use with students today. I absolutely agree with you on those. May your dreams come true Austin!
